Take the Next Exit...

News and views by Christine Hodgson

There were three of us in our party as we made our way over to the North East to re visit Beamish Museum. Or so I thought... The authoratative voice of the Sat Nav broke into the contemplative silence, startled us and suddenly made us aware of an extremely vocal addition to the trio.

The power of that very dislocated voice!

Thinking I knew better about the direction to take and ignoring the instructions, the Voice decided to teach me a lesson. It started to bombard us with instructions. After 300yds, take the next exit, (I decided not to) It repeated, take the next exit and on it went. I SAID TAKE THE NEXT EXIT...., RECALCULATING..... TURN AROUND.....,EXTERMINATE.....,EXTERMINATE...a little dictator in the form of a small box sittingon the dashboard with the means to prolong your journey by taking you up narrow lanes, dead ends, and through all sots of out of the way places. And it did!

Now in life, we sometimes look for and need direction and have to be aware of the consequences of ignoring the advice, but at the end of the day you have to decide for yourself and draw your own conclusions as to the value of the exrcise.

We did eventually arrive safely at Beamish, even if by a circuitous route and enjoyed the day wandering around and taking some pictures. Whether we would have got there any quicker without our travelling voice is open to speculation and the museum is certainly worth the visit. If you haven't already been, it is fertile ground for some good character and period shots, but beware of school holidays and height of season, otherwise you may have more characters than you desire in the picture, and spend a lot of the day negotiating the crowds. Who's Who
Pax Garabedian

Pax very kindly responded to my request for a paragraph or two about his interest in photography, although he did mention being under some duress. Thank you Dot if it was down to you!

Pax was given a little, probably Bakelite camera when aged 13 or 14 years. He used it to emulate his dad in taking family and school events. Other interests came along and assumed prominence, and apart from a short period when at uni, nothing photographic took up his time until moving to Cumbria for his work. He then joined Carlisle camera club and this hobby soon hooked him.

He was then invited to join WCPG whose approach to photography he felt provided a greater spur in widening his horizons.

He enjoys all types of photography, but his prime interest is travel, and of course travel photography, especially candid shots of people and situations. He has travelled extensively, visiting over 50 countries in the last 25 years. His travels led to requests for shows and sent him on a new learning curve in putting together audio visual type shows, and conveying a flavor of the places travelled and it's people. It is now expected that Pax will have a new show for every season!

Pax is very busy in his 'retirement' with various voluntary roles calling him. He has been active in various posts at club level which has led to involvment at local area level as chair of the Western Area Rep on the NCPF Executive. Another hat he wears is the one of Judge which he describes as one of photographies most decried creatures.

He is very busy with this hobby and his Good Lady doesn't believe he has retired, only moved to another job!

Thanks Pax for taking the time.

Safe journey to all travellers and for those setting out for the States this coming month.
