I Just Need a Darkened Room (take note, not a dark room!

News and Views by Christine Hodgson

I thought I was getting on top of the pile of acceptance results, metaphorically speaking, and about to treat myself to a glass of that stuff made from crushed grapes, when seemingly from nowhere, another wad of papers came jumping out at me. Couldn't believe it, where had they been hiding, so difficult(as anyone will vouch who has had the privelege of seeing my well arranged and very tiny, oops, tidy cell.) However, forget the wine and whine, get on with it. Freedom can't be far away!

So here goes:-
Hot off the press

Celje 2008, Slovenia: Acceptances as follows, Pax Garabedian 2, Kate Willmer 1, Bas Montgomery 1, Tony Potter 1.

21st Concorso Fotographico Internazionale Immagini 2008:Tony Potter 3, Les Ayres 4, Bas Montgomery 1, Pax Garabedian 2, and Kate Willmer 1.

Again, well done everybody. I'm off, playtime with grand-daughter. Forget the wine.

The Display Board Now Has Three Legs!

News and Views by Christine Hodgson

Another jovial gathering as the group met on October 16th. There was much applause as Tony announced some recent results and made particular mention of Brian and Fred's achievements.

Many pictures were handled during the evening as prints were returned to their rightful owners, out of storage in Gilgarran, enabling TP to regain use of his table for morning Weetabix!

Most of the group had turned up with their themed prints for display and comment. The themes were "In The Pink", "Pets", and "Small is Beautiful". There were many varied interpretations of the titles and some favourable/constructive comments frm the audience alongside some good natured banter and jokes. Peter went to great lengths to describe the difficulties he'd had trying to reduce the size of certainm anatomical parts of a Florentine sculpture, (the print that is, not the statue) which was very funny, to fit the "Small is Beautiful" theme. John then quipped in and talked about moving knockers on one of his prints!!

Time to move on and raise the tone.... Anyhow, as onr or two us had experienced difficulties with our uise of CS3 programme, we hope the next educational session led by Pax will be a helpful time to share tips.

The evening ended with Fred showing a ProShow Gold presentation entitled "Clicks Around the World". Thanks to our friends in Lane Cove Camera Club, Sydney, we were able to sit back and enjoy watching images of people and places, some familiar and some om our 'wish to see' list which provided plenty of stimulus for our own photography. Especially appreciated was the Didgeridoo music music that accompanied the Australian images. Thanks to all concerned, and we hope to be able to reciprocate. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ 18th October

'Rarely Black or White'

News and Views by Christine Hodgson

A friendly, light hearted and relaxedarmosphere waiting in Camerton Village Hall, made venturing out to our meeting in the unseasonal chill, commonly known as 'brass monkey weather', very worth while.

The evening began with a demonstration from Fred showing us the intracacies of our newly acquired wall mounted screen(which he did very well, omly a couple of false starts, in spite of not attending the training course,) followed by Mike getting to grips with a flip chart easel without it's third leg! Both are going to be useful pieces of equipment when fully operational.

In this ambience of amitie', we were invited to comment on a range of Tony's prints and offer opinions as to whether we would send or not send them into exhibitions. This was an interesting and valuable exercise, in that the opinions and the reasons given for and against submitting, were based on the groups experiences of exhibitions, photographic knowledge and an eye for a pleasing picture. As a number of the group have been involved a lot with exhibitions and are not reticent in expressing their views, (be assured this comment is not aimed at anyonme in particular but if the cap fits....) it was a very useful learning session to those of us with somewhat less experience , although at the end, we remain adamant we still know what we like in a picture.

The opinions were diverse and split at times and demonstrated there is no sure way of detemining whether a picture will gain an acceptance or not, but that a 'good' picture will acieve more acceptances than refusals with many factors coming into play.

In amongst all the humour, the picture the majority agreed (apart from Tony) should be allocated to the reject bin was his picture of half a yellow flower. I can't think of a better way of describing it. Many derogatory comments were made, some unrepeatable, about this signature piece. Many of us hope never to see it again, but somehow I think it will turn up, as an acceptance, somewhere, sometime, perhaps in some disguise, in an exhibition many miles away from here (I hope) in some far flung place in the middle of nowhere! Might even get a Gold!

A Great Night!
